Mission

Since 1972, the Polish Slavic Center has been promoting the culture and heritage of Poland. We support our over 40,000 members and extended community by providing social and legal services and enriching cultural experiences.

The Polish and Slavic Center offers a robust array of social services programs aimed at improving the lives of those in our community.

For over 48 years, our Extended Social Services Program has helped elderly members of our community access important social benefits programs. The Polish and Slavic Center provides essential information, help, and assistance in obtaining benefits related to Social Security/retirement, disability, Medicare/Medicaid, housing, unemployment, and others. Our program team assists clients in various ways such as filling out and completing applications, pre-screening for eligibility, translating various documents, understanding the New York City laws and regulations, and using our network of agencies and services to provide the best assistance to our members.

The Krakus Senior Center has been serving our senior community for over 30 years by offering a full schedule of social, health, and wellness programming. We provide free daily nutritious meals at Krakus and our satellite site, the John Paul II Friendship Center, and meal delivery through the City Meals on Wheels program. Our educational and recreational offerings include a choir group, a Polish library club, a cross-word and chess club, computer classes, lectures from medical professionals, and regularly scheduled trips. The Krakus Senior Center is a second home for many senior citizens that enriches their lives and strengthens community ties.

Our Immigration and Legal Services program offers free immigration and legal services. Through the program, PSC helps immigrants prepare and file legal documents regarding US citizenship, family sponsorship, Green Card extensions, and travel documents. Our bilingual staff also offers preparatory courses for the US-citizenship test, and provides legal advice and personal assistance in landlord/tenant disputes, and child support and divorce matters. The program has a proven track record of serving our constituents and has earned the trust of those we work with.

In addition to these services, PSC offers innovative and high-quality programming on Polish art, history, and culture. We partner with both established and up-and-coming Polish artists, musicians, and performers to host exhibitions, concerts, special lectures, and other cultural events. We also work with the youth in our community to develop their creativity and confidence to invest in the next generation of Polish artists. Our goal is to spread Polish art and culture in the community and to create a strong network of artists to improve Polish representation in the arts.

Whether you are a Polish immigrant, a Polish American, or are just curious about Polish culture, we warmly invite you to visit our center to learn more.

History

The idea to establish the Polish & Slavic Center originated in the early 1970s. At the time, Reverend Longin Tolczyk was working with Polish-American immigrants who had just arrived in New York City. These ideas and dreams became a reality in 1972 when the Polish & Slavic Center was formed. Five years later and through the Polish & Slavic Center, Rev. Longin Tolczyk formed the Polish & Slavic Federal Credit Union.

Since that time, the Polish and Slavic Center has grown tremendously and become a staple for the Polish community in the Tri-State Area and our 40,000 members. We occupy two buildings in Greenpoint, Brooklyn (177 Kent Street and 176 Java Street) that feature state-of-the-art performing stages, a fully-functioning kitchen, and community meeting spaces. Annual sponsorship funds from the City allows us to provide much-needed social services free of charge, and we are always interested in expanding our array of social services and arts programming to provide the best for our community.

Our supporters

Our services would not be possible without the generosity of our members and donors. Your contributions allow us to make a difference in our community, and we express our sincere gratitude for your generosity and support.
