IRS: Recovery Rebate Credit

This week’s outreach bundle is focused on claiming a Recovery Rebate Credit and other helpful tax season items.

Key points:

  • Recovery Rebate Credit: If you’re eligible – and either didn’t receive Economic Impact Payments or if you think you qualify for more than you received – you’ll need to file a 2020 tax return and claim the Recovery Rebate Credit even if you otherwise are not required to file a tax return.
  • Earned Income Tax Credit: The EITC can give qualifying workers with low-to-moderate income a substantial financial boost. EITC not only reduces the amount of tax someone owes but may give them a refund even if they don't owe any taxes or aren't required to file a return.
    • Important change for EITCTaxpayers may use their 2019 earned income to figure the EITC if they earned more in 2019 than in 2020.
  • Under the COVID-related Taxpayer Certainty and Disaster Tax Relief Act of 2020, flexible spending arrangements (FSA) plans now have additional discretion in 2021 and 2022 to adjust their programs to help employees better meet the unanticipated consequences of the public health emergency.
